Expect More Investments In Education, Buhari Assures Nigerians

File photo President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that allocations to the education sector will be improved as revenue increases, describing the sector as a major engine for the development of any country. According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari gave the assurance on Monday while addressing the Nigerian community in Paris, France. He further stated that the about five per cent allocation to the sector was inadequate to propel the desired growth for the economy, pointing that the United Nations target of 26 per cent remains ideal. “We are currently reviewing investments in the entire infrastructure of the country like road, rail and power, including investing more in education. We will certainly need to do more in education,” he said. Arsenal Manager, Unai Emery has confirmed that Danny Welbeck has been taken to hospital to undergo further tests after suffering a leg injury in Arsenal’s Europa League clash against Sporting Lisbon. Speaking further, Emery said that Welbeck would have X-rays on his leg after appearing to break his ankle. The British Government has spoken on the clashes between Nigerian security agencies and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, also known as Shittes. Two men have landed in trouble in Lagos after they lured a 20-year old lady, fondled her breasts and engaged her in sex romp in Ikorodu area of Lagos where they reside. The suspects, 28-year old Emmanuel Ubi and Praise Akpobomen, allegedly lured the victim into an apartment, got her confused and fondled her breasts which made her become more confused. They were said to have removed her pant and engaged her in sex romp against her consent. However, after the romp, the victim regained herself and claimed that she was raped because it was not with her consent. The matter was reported to the police and the suspects were arrested. Thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Cross River State have concluded plans to dump the party. The aggrieved members, who claimed to be the ‘original members’ of the party, are accusing President Muhamnadu Buhari of not protecting them. The APC members, who are likely to jump ship to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had alleged fowl play in the conduct of the governorship and National Assembly primaries in the state. The organised labour unions have called off the planned nationwide industrial action initially scheduled to commence today to press home workers’ demand for a new nationalminimum wage. The National Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, announced the suspension last night in Abuja at the end of the last meeting of the tripartite committee set up to come up with the new minimum wage. Wabba said the decision to suspend the action was reached after agreements were reached and documents signed. “Having reached this position and agreements signed, the proposed strike action is hereby suspended,” he said. Wabba however, refused to disclose the figure of the new minimum wage arrived at by the committee. He said the figure would only be made public after the committee’s report would have been presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by 4.15pm on Tuesday. On Sunday, members of the Biafra Zionists Federation on Sunday threatened to commit “mass suicide” due to the uncertainty over the whereabouts of their leader, Benjamin Onwuka. Onwuka and some members of the group were arrested on August 20th while trying to occupy the Enugu State Government House, where they planned to declare the ‘independence’ of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria. The secessionists were arrested by the police and the Department of State Services as they approached the gate to the Government House. Labour Suspends Planned Nationwide Strike

The strike had been scheduled to commence on Tuesday to ensure that the Federal Government meets the demand of workers for a new national minimum wage. However, the National Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, announced the suspension at the end of the meeting of the tripartite committee set up to come up with the new minimum wage late on Monday. According to Wabba, the decision to suspend the strike was taken after agreements were reached and documents signed. The Chairman of the tripartite committee said it would present its report to President Buhari on Tuesday. The committee, however, failed to reach consensus over new minimum wage proposals as the Federal government insisted on N24,000 and Labour N30, 000.
